Now before everybody clocks me, I know that Jace said in CoB that Alec hadn't killed a demon because he was busy looking after him and Izzy, but how exactly was he helping if he never needed to kill a demon to protect them? Was he just standing off to the side saying, "watch out!" This wouldn't be a problem if it helped develop Alec's character, but it doesn't it is never mentioned again past CoB, and that plus Alec getting hurt by the greater demon really only serve to propel the characters around him more so than himself: But Alec is the only person who still hasn't managed to kill one demon in his whole life by the end of CoB. Were they never tested on this sort of stuff? It's also strange in the grand scheme of things: Clary manages to kill the first demon she ever sees in CoB without any knowledge of the Shadow World Simon, a mundane, does the same in CoB, but with a greater demon In CoFA, Simon manages to yet again outsmart a demon, the "mother of all demons" after being a Vampire for like 2 or 3 months Clary then manages to straight up kill multiple demons in CoLS after like 2 months of actual training. Hodge was their tutor, but he couldn't leave the Institute. It makes me question how the were all trained in the first place. Meanwhile Jace had already killed hundreds, and Isabelle had killed numerous demons as well. Alec was nearly 18 in CoB, about to be a full-fledged Shadowhunter and go on assignments, but he had no actual experience killing demons.
